Portuguese Burial Society constructed 1865, acquired and restored, Archdiocese of New Orleans 1977
The Archdiocese of New Orleans graciously donated a vault in this tomb for the reburial of human remains from the St. Peter Street Cemetery, recovered in archaeological excavations in 1984 and 2011. This cemetery, located in the Vieux Carre was the city’s primary burial ground from approximately 1718 to 1789.
The cemetery served all people of New Orleans, European Colonists, free people of color and those enslaved of African descent, and those of native origin. Most of those interred here are of African descent.
